The Wise Elephant and the Cunning Jackal | Moral story | English story | Short story | Hindi story

Once upon a time, in the lush green forests of India, there lived a wise and kind-hearted elephant named Hathi. Hathi was not just a majestic creature, but he also possessed great wisdom, and all the animals in the forest admired and respected him. He was always ready to help others and was known for his honesty and integrity.

One scorching summer day, the forest was facing a severe water shortage. The once flowing river had dried up, and the animals were struggling to find water to quench their thirst. Hathi, being aware of the situation, decided to do something about it. He gathered all the animals and proposed a plan to dig a well in the forest. Everyone enthusiastically agreed and started working together to dig the well. Days turned into weeks, and with their collective efforts, the well was finally dug, and water began to fill it up.

The news of the well spread like wildfire, and animals from neighboring forests also started coming to drink water from it. Hathi welcomed all the animals and made sure everyone got their fair share of water. The well became a symbol of unity and cooperation among the animals.

However, not all the animals were as kind-hearted as Hathi. A cunning jackal named Lalchand lived on the outskirts of the forest. Lalchand was jealous of Hathi's popularity and the respect he commanded from all the animals. He wanted to have the same admiration and power as Hathi, so he devised a wicked plan to ruin the well's reputation.

One day, Lalchand went to the well and started spreading rumors about Hathi. He told the animals that Hathi was keeping the best and most refreshing water for himself and giving them the dirty and muddy water. He even went to the extent of saying that Hathi was planning to poison them through the water in the well. The animals were shocked to hear such accusations against Hathi, whom they trusted and respected.

The news reached Hathi, and he was deeply hurt by the false allegations. He couldn't believe that someone would spread lies to tarnish his reputation and create distrust among the animals. However, instead of retaliating, Hathi decided to investigate the matter thoroughly. He called for a meeting with all the animals and invited Lalchand to present his case.

Lalchand, being cunning and manipulative, continued to weave more lies in front of the animals. But Hathi remained calm and composed. He decided to prove his innocence in a fair and unbiased manner. Hathi suggested that they appoint an independent observer who would taste the water from the well and share their findings with everyone.

The animals thought it was a fair idea, and they all agreed. They appointed a wise and neutral owl as the observer. The owl tasted the water and declared that the water in the well was pure and untainted. There was no difference in the quality of water being given to everyone.

The truth came to light, and Lalchand's deceitful intentions were exposed. The animals were angry at him for trying to divide them and create animosity in the forest. They realized that unity and trust were the keys to their survival and prosperity. Lalchand, feeling ashamed, apologized to Hathi and the rest of the animals.

From that day onwards, Hathi's reputation only grew stronger. The animals admired him even more for his wisdom and fairness. The well remained a symbol of unity, and the animals continued to drink from it, cherishing the bond they shared.

Moral: The story of the Wise Elephant and the Cunning Jackal teaches us that honesty and trust are invaluable virtues. No matter how hard someone tries to tarnish our reputation, the truth will always prevail. Unity and cooperation are essential for overcoming challenges and achieving greatness.
